Obsidian added a new script function that lets you manipulate the equipped weapon of the player (for the weapon repair kits), and it turns out it works on NPCs as well... but only on equipped weapons. I placed a 9mm pistol into the inventory of one of Herculine's creations, and I noticed the condition had improved after a few spot checks. I think at least a game day passed before the change happened.
