Nos' Adventures, Next Entry

Well, I'm part-way through writing entry #3. About a third written, another half played and screenshotted, with a bit more yet to plan out.

Already... the project is in jeopardy. Why? I'm not losing interest - really, I don't bore that quickly. The problem is the same problem I've always had with my writing: I've begun censoring myself.

Deleting and rewriting parts to "clean them up", and to avoid having the story degenerate into the travels of a pair of nearly amoral monsters.

Trouble is, when I censor myself, you can tell it. The "feel" changes, and it goes from being unequivocally me, to sounding tacked on and unnatural.

So, I have a bit of a quandary. Do I be me, and showcase exactly the sort of fucked up shit that goes down in my games, or do I clean it up; and come across as a worse storyteller than I actually am?

Not sure. I know it'll never be published, so I don't have to worry about the PC-ness of it all... but I still know that the intarwebz are archived somewhere until the fall of humanity.

  1. To thine own self be true.

One of the most prized possessions of a writer is his integrity.

And if the intarwebz really are archived for the duration of humanity, perhaps someone in the distant future after humanity has recovered from the real nuclear holocaust will find your writings and, due to their prophetic nature, will declare them a classic and every kid in school will be forced to read Nos' Adventures.

And if not, at least you wrote what you wanted to write, not what you thought someone else wanted to read.

  2. On Blogger is there sometimes a delay between the time you post something to when it actually appears? I coulda sworn I just typed something here...

Maybe I accidentally hit the home button before I had hit the post comment button...

Anyway, the gist of what I had oh so poetically typed was this:

As a writer you must be true to yourself. If you lose your integrity, you lose that part of your writing that is you. If you have a story to tell, tell it your way, not the way you think you're supposed tell it.

  3. Okay, I'm certain I hit the proper buttons in the proper order that time. I'm gonna go to bed and try again in the morning...

  4. Nominally, your comments appear instantly. But Blogger is weird sometimes, and will "lose" existing comments, or make new ones take hours to show up.

I still get copies of them in my email box. I'm sure it'll appear sooner or later.

  5. Matt....Be yourself. Simple as that. From one writer to another just be yourself and don't worry of how it comes off. Doubt you will get hate mail or people will stop using your mods and all. Write how it comes about and show us a good story.

  6. Herculine and David:

I appreciate the thoughts. I'm not trying to abandon my artistic integrity or something, I'm just a little leery about freely displaying just how far past the line I've gleefully gone in my life.

As I told Herculine earlier, though, I think I've found a comfortable middle-ground, where I won't have to censor myself, but won't give anyone too many uncomfortable insights into my personality, either.
