Nexus

Gods, first that Dragon Age nonsense that keeps servers clogged 24/7, and now this 'new look' that makes comments a complete pain to read what with the sideways scrolling.

Look, I get it.

You majored in flash in college like a dumbass, and in this economy you can't get a job.

I feel for you, but for fuck's sake get a hobby besides designing the most uselessly complex web site possible!

What's with the screenshot-slideshow bullshit, too? If I want to look at mod screenshots, I'll click the images tab.

What's next? A CNN-style bar scrolling across the bottom showing the latest twitter updates from the site team?

You know, between the morons, the game's bugs, and now my method of distributing files is fucked...

I'm really thinkin' ttomwv had the right idea when he bailed for greener pastures in October.

Edit: Friday evening.

I must not have been the only one that hated that shit, because the "new look" lasted less than twenty-four hours. The new NEW look, has the shit laid out correctly so that you can actually read file details and comments.

Guess I'm not the only person who doesn't want to throw away money on a 65" HD computer monitor backed up by a GPU that runs full time in 2048x1536.

  1. So, what do you think of the Nexus' plan to have an Adult Nexus spinoff?

It seems like an amazingly poor concept, if anything, it will attract a less mature audience to the portion that they are trying to protect....

  2. Personally?

I think it's more of that bleedin' heart "oh, won't SOMEONE think of the children?!" nonsense.

For my part, the game is rated R/M/17+, so if you're not old enough to see some nudity, you're not old enough to play the damned game.

If you are old enough, but just don't want to see nudity, there's already a system in place for that - you can just turn off adult-only files from being displayed.

I can sort of see their point, though. While I'm not really active in that segment, I do keep an eye on AP and such mainly out of curiosity, and there's a LOT of sickos out there trying to figure out how to turn FO3 into a loli-pr0n game. The "shojo" race is a perfect example.

A lot of the stuff that makes up my "special" equipment plugin was scavenged and adapted from a Japanese mod database, and seeing the screenshots of what the originators of the shojo race have been doing with it... it's just sick.

While they've never cropped up on the Nexus that I know of, there are apparently pose mods out there that involve beast, zombies, and tentacle rape.

Still... I hate censorship in pretty much all forms, and I believe that this puritanical bent will only hurt the site. Rational adults who help out the community but also happen to like some eyecandy will leave. Sickos never did anything more than download stuff, and occasionally post a poorly-spelled comment demanding more smut, so this won't hurt them much at all.

I do find it interesting, as others have noted, that wanton violence where you blow someone in a chunky mist is apparently fine... but for some reason a pair of tits or some pubic hair are going to destroy society as we know it.

At the end of the day, though, I don't pay the server hosting bills. It's a private server, and he who pays for it can do pretty much whatever he likes.

I'll say this though, it has sealed the fact that I'll never become a premium member. I kept talking myself out of it because of the constant server issues... but uptime aside, I won't actively support censorship in any form.

  3. Well, now's your chance to go in there and kvetch, before he goes and makes what I consider a major blunder.

Which reminds me, the site has been getting rather gaudy of late, hasn't it? I think I liked it better when the images just hung out in a little area of the description, called 'Images'. :P

  4. You're forgetting rule of the Universe #441609B, subsection 142:

No one gives a shit what I think.

Least of all the "don't be mean to stupid people!" staff that run the Nexus.

  5. When I was a kid I was told that the only way to guarantee that your voice is not heard is to never speak.

My family did a lot of yelling. :P (I am from South Boston, originally, we took our politics seriously. :) My father once dragged Senator Moakley to our apartment.)

  6. Yes, my family is big on the theory that he who yells the loudest wins the argument.

I subscribe to the theory that people who ignore a shout will often strain to hear a whisper. Consequently, I don't yell; except to be heard over an engine, the wind, etc.

Despite the amount I rant and rave on my blogs, I actually don't speak much at all in real life, generally only answering direct questions.

In my experience, people really don't care what I think and are going to do what they're going to do, so I may as well save my breath. Trying to convince someone they're being stupid doesn't accomplish anything except raising my blood pressure.
